Letta AI alternative

Stateful AI agents with memory your code can read

camelRun is an open-source runtime for stateful AI agents. It keeps every message and every file your agent writes, and your code reads both. Use Claude, GPT, Gemini and more, on run.camelai.com or your own servers.

Letta vs camelRun

How Letta and camelRun give AI agents memory

Memory
LettaMemory blocks in MemFS: files in a git repository that the agent reads, rewrites and reorganizes, plus a background process Letta calls dreaming.
camelRunEvery message in the agent's history, plus a workspace of files that the agent and your code both read and write.
Where it runs
LettaLetta Cloud, your own machine, or the Letta App Server on a server you run.
camelRunrun.camelai.com, or your own servers with one container and Postgres.
Open source
LettaLetta Code is open source under Apache-2.0.
camelRunThe runtime is open source under the AGPL, and the SDKs are MIT.
Pricing
LettaAPI plan: $20 a month, plus $0.10 per active agent a month and $0.00015 per second of tool execution.
camelRun$0.01 per agent-hour while an agent is in a run, and $0.10 per GB-month of storage. Prepaid, no subscription.
Who should pick which
Pick Letta if you want one agent that learns about you and keeps the same memory from your terminal to the web and your chat apps.
Pick camelRun if you're building a product where every customer, ticket or thread gets its own agent, and your code needs to read what each one knows.

History and files

Read everything your AI agent keeps

This script hands an agent a CSV of sales. The agent writes a report into its workspace, and the script downloads it. Next month the same agent still has the report and the whole conversation.

  • Your code reads and writes the same files

Download, list, link or upload any file in the agent's workspace by path, with the agent's own access.

  • The agent sees your edits before it writes

If your code changes one of its files, the agent reads your version before it can write that file again.

  • Fork from any message

Copy an agent with its files as they are now and its history up to any message you pick, and take the conversation another way.

Letta V1 server API

Move your agents off the retired Letta V1 server

Letta retired its V1 API server: the last release, 0.16.8, came out on May 14, 2026. Here is where each part of it lives in camelRun.

FAQ

Questions about Letta AI and camelRun

  1. Is Letta AI free?

Letta has a free plan for a few agents, and you can run it on your own machine with your own model keys. Paid plans start at $20 a month (Letta's pricing page, checked October 22, 2026). camelRun is prepaid with no subscription: you pay for the hours your agents spend working, plus storage. Self-hosting camelRun is free under the AGPL.

  2. Is Letta AI open source?

Yes. Letta, the team behind MemGPT, publishes Letta Code, the harness behind its agents, under Apache-2.0. camelRun is open source too: the runtime is AGPL, the SDKs are MIT, and you can host it yourself with one container and Postgres.

  3. How to use Letta AI?

Install Letta Code with npm install -g @letta-ai/letta-code and run letta in your terminal, or use chat.letta.com in the browser. To give every user of your own product a stateful agent with camelRun, install the SDK (npm install @camelai/run or pip install camelai-run) and give each agent a key.

  4. Can I move my agents off the Letta V1 server API?

Yes. Letta retired its V1 API server. On camelRun, make one keyed agent for each Letta agent and start it with its old messages, put its memory blocks into instructions and workspace files, and keep your tools in your own code.

  5. How does a camelRun agent remember things between conversations?

Each agent keeps two things: its history, with every message even after a long conversation is summarized for the model, and a workspace of files. Ask the agent in its instructions to keep notes in a file, and it reads and updates them on later runs. Your code can read and edit the same files.

  6. Can I take my agent's memory with me if I leave camelRun?

Yes. Export everything (agents, whole histories, files and definitions) as one zip at any time. The runtime is open source, so you can also run the same API on your own servers.
